“I May Destroy You,” “Unorthodox,” “Crip Camp,” and More Score Peabody Nominations

“I May Destroy You” and “Unorthodox” were among the most celebrated series of 2020, and now they can add Peabody nominations to their extensive list of honors. The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors has announced this year’s nominees, and both series landed nods in the entertainment category.

Created by and starring Michaela Coel, HBO/BBC One’s “I May Destroy You” tells the story of a London writer reckoning with the aftermath of her sexual assault. “Unorthodox” is based on Deborah Feldman’s bestselling memoir of the same name and sees a 19-year-old woman (Shira Hass) fleeing her Hasidic Jewish community and arranged marriage. Maria Schrader won an Emmy for directing the Netflix drama.

Documentaries up for honors include “Crip Camp,” Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht’s tribute to a ramshackle summer camp for teenagers with disabilities that helped spark a revolution, and “Time,” Garrett Bradley’s portrait of a modern-day abolitionist and her decades-long fight to secure her husband’s release from prison. Lisa Cortes and Liz Garbus’ “All In: The Fight for Democracy” and Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s “Athlete A” are also among the doc nominees. The former explores voter suppression in the U.S. and the latter investigates the sexual abuse scandal that rocked USA Gymnastics.

“Peabody is proud to continue its tradition of recognizing diverse and emerging voices, those telling powerful stories that audiences need to engage with and hear,” said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody. “Once again, our nominees offer moral clarity for how we as ethical citizens might respond.”
