Both J.D. and Turk were extremely childish throughout the entire run of “Scrubs,” which was surprisingly one of the things that made them both so endearing to audiences because their behavior was a dose of levity amongst the seriousness of their medical careers. But this also meant that their co-workers and loved ones often fell foul of their devil-may-care attitudes. Perhaps none were affected more than Carla, who had put up with J.D. and Turk’s antics for years — even without realizing it.
In Season 5, Episode 1, “My Intern’s Eyes,” Turk really crosses a line when he and Carla decide to start a family. Secretly, the young surgeon isn’t sure he’s ready to be a father. Unbeknownst to his wife, Turk starts slipping birth control into Carla’s mouth while she sleeps. It’s actually quite a horrible moment, as not only is Turk taking Carla’s autonomy and authority away from her, but he’s also controlling their marriage to suit his needs.
To make matters worse, “Scrubs” plays this off as a zany joke when Turk asks J.D. about the situation, saying, “Think she’ll be mad?” He doesn’t even willingly confess to the situation either, because Carla later finds one of the birth control pills hidden in a brownie. It’s amazing she didn’t divorce Turk for that alone.
